14 FEBRUARY

The mild weather on monday and tuesday has caused the snow on the ice to melt and left the ice hard and shiny after the last night cold weather. The ice is still very thick and stable and has not been effected by the last to days mild weather.  The conditions until the race on Sunday is still ideal with temperatures remaining below zero and maybe some light snowfalls on Friday and Saturday.  However, some snow will not be any hindrance as we are ready to plow as soon the snow falls. Looking forward seeing you on the ice on Sunday.

11 February

This weekend houndred of people have been skating the track of Sigtunarännet. We drilled 37 holes to check the thickness which were overall 20-24 cm. Thereafter we changed to a shorter drill (16 cm) which did not go through the ice at any place. The cracks is currently no problem to pass except at one location where you have to slow down a bit when passing. The weather forecast for the week until the race day is great, with a few degrees above zero daytime and a few degrees belo zero at night. We are expecting the thin snowlayer in the track to melt in the day and freeze again at night making a hard and nice ice surface. The strength of the ice should not be a problem on Sunday. Hence we are focusing on follow the development of the cracks.

Today the Sigtuna City Council plowed the preferred track. The ice has grown thicker quicker than expected and we are now hoping to have the race track passinng both the Steninge Castle and Rosersbergs Castle. It is a beautiful environment and possible to skate only certain years. The ice is now 8-15 cm which means that we need some more dyas of cold weather. Luckliy the weather forecast is with us with cold nights and days where the temperature mostly stays below zero. Some days are also predicted to be clear which is very positive for the ice-growth. The conditions for a beautiful race the 18th of february are very good.

We have been lucky in Sigtuna with minimal snowfall this week and now the weather is shifting towards colder temperatures. The thin layer of snow has blown away and it is forecasted clear weather without any snow and temperatures between minus 3 to minus 20 degrees. Today the ice on Sigtunafjärden measured between 13-15 cm and the thickness is growing fast in the cold temperatures. The conditions is very good at tha moment and we are even discussing to change the course slightly so that we pass the two castles Steninge Slott och Rosersbergs Slott. The exact course will be decided just a few days prior to the race. We are most greatful if as many as possible can register as soon as possible as this facilitates our planning greatly.

28 JANUARY

Today we were able to skate the full distance of the race from Sigtuna to Kairo (Väsby) for the first time. The ice was still thin (4-9 cm) with a film of water upon it. On some sections it was double-ice that cracked beneath the skates. The water film and the double ice made it very difficult to assess the ice while skating so we had to use the ice picks frequently. We definitely dissuade anyone to skate the distance without great knowledge of ice skating on thin ice and full equipment. The risk for going through the ice is currently very high.

The weather will now shift to colder temperature according to all weather apps. Unfortunately it is also predicted some snow. We are expecting the ice to be thicker next weekend.

26 JANUARY

It is now ice on the whole of Sigtunafjärden but it is still thin (2-6 cm). The last days mild weather has caused the snow to melt. The weather forecast are predicting cooler weather and we beleive the ice to thicker in some days. On Garnsviken, just next to Sigtunafjärden, the ice is between 15-20 cm. This is the back-up race track and the probability for the race to be cancelled is very low.  However, we still hope and think it will be possible to race from Sigtuna to Kairo.
